REVIEW
Although now parts of this book are dated, most if not all of the information is still relevant to those who love to view the ballet. Easy to read and informative; not a book that endeavors to explain all the ballet positions and movements, the focus is more on style and evolution of ballet as an art form. There is a glossary of ballet terms in the books back pages with written descriptions of the movements. The vocabulary of ballet introduced slowly throughout the books pages. As ballet is a visual performing art, there is an unfortunate lack of photographs and only an occasional line illustration. The real strength of this book is the intelligent historical approach to ballet as a whole, as an art form that evolves and at times incorporates other forms of dance. The books author, Walter Terry, was a respected dance editor for the New York Herald Tribune and The Saturday Review.
